Defra Public Consultation: Environment Act 2021 Targets

Businesses, News, Schools, Third Sector – Thursday, March 24th, 2022

On 16 March the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) launched a public consultation about its plans for new environmental targets under the Environment Act 2021. Defra is seeking views on its proposed targets, and the consultation is open until Wednesday 11 May.

The Environment Act 2021 required the government to set at least one long-term target in each of the following areas:

  • Air quality
  • Biodiversity
  • Water
  • Resource efficiency and waste reduction

Additionally, targets will be set for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution and species abundance.

The targets are intended to respond to the science and the public demand for enhanced environmental protection, whilst requiring action across the economy and providing long-term certainty to businesses and society.

Any individual or organisation interested in responding is encouraged to do so via Citizen Space, or alternatively by submitting responses via email or post.
