News – Wednesday, May 30th, 2018

World Environment Day is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. The theme for 2018 is beating plastic pollution.

Join #BeatPlasticPollution game of tag on social media

We would like to encourage everyone in the borough to help us tackle this urgent issue by joining the campaign’s #BeatPlasticPollution game of tag to demonstrate how people can reduce their use of plastics. It is very simple and only takes just 30 seconds.

1. Choose which type of single-use plastic you’re ready to give up

2. Take a selfie (photo or video) showing yourself with the reusable alternative that you’re ready to embrace, for example, if you are giving up bottled water, take a selfie with your reusable bottle.

3. Share your selfie on social media and “tag” three friends, businesses or high-profile people to challenge them to do the same within 24 hours. Be sure to use the #BeatPlasticPollution and #FreePlasticCamden hashtags and mention @UNEnvironment

4. That’s it! So share your selfie and tag at least three people to start spreading the word.

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time with statistics showing that there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish by 2050. To change the future, we each need to play our part. Whether it is a bottled soft drink, a bag from the supermarket, or a spoon in a coffee shop, single-use plastic has become embedded in our daily lives. The low cost, convenience and lightness of these products have revolutionized the packaging of goods. However, it is now clear that this convenience has had a catastrophic impact on the environment.
